Johnson sorry about ‘away tie’ draw

TORQUAY UNITED

- BY DAVID THOMAS

Manager Gary Johnson says he feels most for Torquay United’s supporters after the Gulls were drawn away from home again in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup.

United were waiting for the result of last night’s replay between Brightlingsea Regent and Egham Town on the Essex coast before knowing exactly how far they will have to travel on Saturday week, October 6.

Johnson said: “We’d rather have been at home, of course, and it’s a long way to go, especially if it’s Brightlingsea, but It’s another decent chance to get through.

“The prize is bigger than the trip, that’s for sure.

“I just feel for our supporters – they travel far enough as it is, they’ve been to Hungerford and Lymington over the last week couple of weeks, and it would have been lovely for them to have had a home game.

“But hopefully we can get to the next round and then have a bit more luck with the draw.

“We will have to be professional, and maybe use some of our winnings from the Lymington game to stay overnight again.”

United’s club record 7-0 hammering of Wessex League Lymington earned them £9,000 in prize money, and there will be another £15,000 at stake in the next round.

Both Brightlingsea and Egham are in the Bostik Isthmian League, Regent in the Premier Division and Egham in South Central.

Plainmoor tenants Truro

City were handed a home draw against Welling if they come through tonight’s replay against NL North side Hereford at TQ1.
