Gulls are up for Woking challenge

TORQUAY UNITED

- BY DAVID THOMAS

Gary Johnson was quick to acknowledge that Woking will provide a much sterner test for his Gulls squad than Lymington Town did in the FA Cup at the weekend, describing his first home match against the NL South leaders on Saturday as 'a different kettle of fish'.

But United's manager was still delighted that his players used their obvious superiority over the Wessex League 'Linnets' to carry on the improvement which he is determined to produce this season.

"It doesn't matter whether you are playing a team at your level, their level or a line of mannequins – you still have to put in the running and the effort to look good," said Johnson.

"I thought our actual passing and receiving of the ball was very good, and our touch was far better than the previous week (Hungerford 2-0).

"It was nice to get the goals, because everybody has been saying about us not scoring enough goals. But I have set all the strikers tasks for the season, so it was great to see Brett Williams come off the bench and get two. Ruairi Keating and Jamie Reid have both got three goals now, and that will do their confidence good.

"I thought Jake Andrews was fantastic, Opi Edwards was as well and, although people haven't seen much of Saikou Janneh yet, he is very quick.

"But you can't win a game with three people, and I couldn't pick a man of the match – there were several.

"Woking will be a different kettle of fish on Saturday – we will need to concentrate harder, defend more than we have done and step up again.

"But the lads are in that frame of mind where they are really looking forward to the game and the challenge."
