BUCKLAND Athletic Football Club had a weekend to remember – with a clean sweep that saw nine wins out of nine competitive games for their men’s, women’s, girls’ and boys’ sides.

The men’s first team enjoyed a 4-0 away win at Hengrove Athletic in the Western League, while the ladies team put five past Alphington Ladies in the Devon Women’s Senior Cup to book themselves into the semi-finals of the competition they won two seasons ago.

Not to be outdone, the men’s reserves hammered Ashburton 11-1 in the South Devon League Premier Division, while the Ladies’ Development side beat Lakeside Athletic 7-2 in the Devon Women’s League.

The men’s third team dispatched Riviera United 7-0 away to make the quarter-finals of their favourite competition – the South Devon League’s Fred Hewings Cup.

The Under-15s boys will play Liverton in the Pioneer League semi-final after their 7-3 victory at KM United, while the Under-14s girls enjoyed an emphatic 6-0 win over Broadmeadow Chiefs in the Pioneer League.

Last but not least, both the Under-12s teams made cup progress. The boys defeated KM United 2-1 away to make the quarter-finals of their league cup, while the girls overcame Moors Youth 6-0 away to set up a semi-final against Cullompton Rangers.

Buckland’s Director of Women’s and Girls’ Football, Grant Fisher, said he was ‘overwhelmed’ with the club’s achievement.

He said: “Results are magnificent – it proves what’s going on away from the game during the week – but they aren’t the be all and end all.

“For our junior sides at the club, what is the most pleasing thing to see is a clear understanding we want to play football.

“We want to build from the back. This takes time and a lot of work. We also want to create people as well as players.

“We have a far bigger job than just winning games of football. It’s about life.

He added: “We want to give back to the community, we want people to come and enjoy our wonderful facilities.”
