Bovey and Stoke get title chase fillip as leaders Elmore slip up

CARLSBERG SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE

- BY LEE HALL

BOVEY Tracey extended their unbeaten run in the in Division One East of the Peninsula League to five games after Saturday’s 3-0 win at home to Crediton United – and following Elmore’s shock defeat at the University of Exeter, Will Small’s men now trail the Division One East leaders by a single point.

Ollie Aplin scored twice for Bovey, with Mark Perring also on target for the hosts.

It was a deserved win for Bovey, though they were made to work hard for the three points against a Crediton side who felt they were in the game until the dismissal of skipper Dave Lee early in the second half.

Small said: “We didn’t play

Olly Alpin (centre) is congratulated after scoring for Bovey Tracey in their 3-0 win against Crediton particularly well, we were quite sloppy but we still scored three goals and picked up another three points.

“I think our goalkeeper had one save to make in the whole game, but we have to be much-improved on Saturday when we play St Martins, who won the league last season.

“There are still six or seven teams in with a chance, but we’ll keep going, treat every game as if it’s a cup final and see where we are come December when things start opening up.”

Stoke Gabriel remain on the same points as Bovey following a 4-1 win at Alphington.

Tom Kelly set them on their way with the opening goal of the game on ten minutes.

And despite Danny Gaze wasting an opportunity to double their lead from the penalty spot, Kelly struck again to make it 2-0, before Adam Dyson came off the bench to score a third.

Nathan Edds scored a fourth for the visitors, before Alphington hit back with a late consolation goal.

Brixham hit Ilfracombe Town for six with a devastating display of finishing at the weekend.

Steve Bowker and George Dandridge hit two goals apiece, before Carl Bradley and Reece Somers completed the rout to hand Brixham their tenth win of the season.

Newton Abbot Spurs claimed a ‘Last’ gasp win at Honiton Town thanks to Neil Last’s late winner.

Spurs had trailed to Chris Long’s 20th minute opener, but with Neal Osborn outstanding in the visiting goal, this was the only time he was beaten as Jonny Holding brought them level.

And with full-time approaching Last struck at the death to hand Spurs victory.

Teignmouth suffered their eighth defeat of the season after going down 3-1 at Sidmouth Town.

Waldon Athletic were also on the receiving end of a 3-1 defeat, at home to Torridgeside.

Liverton United have now conceded 98 goals in 15 league outings after going down to their latest defeat, this time a 10-0 reverse at Axminster Town.
