Expensive artworks stolen in brazen galleries thefts

POLICE are appealing for witnesses following reports of thefts from galleries in St Georges Square and Foss Street in Dartmouth.

The incidents were reported to have happened during the day on Friday, September 7, and thousands of pounds worth of art was taken.

Police received reports of a theft from Whitesails of Dartmouth where it was reported that two bronze statues named Toby and Marrise worth £3,000 were taken from the gallery.

The statues are described as big and recognisab­le.

On the same day, a large antique clock valued at more than £1,000 was taken was from Simon Drew Gallery. The clock is antique blue and white, and approximat­ely two feet tall. The clocks shows a violin, chess set, teapots and chairs.

A hare sculpture was also taken from Baxters Gallery. A painting was also stolen from the gallery, showing a bird with ‘Ronnie’ inscribed on the back. These items are valued at around £500.

PC Phil Johnson said: “We are treating these incidents as linked and it’s believed the locations were targeted. All of the items are unique, rare and recognisab­le. I’d appeal for any- one who witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area at the time to contact police. Call 101 or email 101@dc.police.uk quoting CR/083679/18.
