Food waste is scary come Halloween

-

HALLOWEEN pumpkin carvers in South Devon are being urged to do their bit for the environment.

The UK produces more than seven million tonnes of food waste each year, enough to produce energy for 350,000 homes. Councils want households to compost their pumpkins or put them in their brown bins, from which material goes to make soil conditioner for use in farms.

Cllr Rufus Gilbert said: “The real horror at Halloween is the tragic waste of so many pumpkins, which could have been recycled into soil conditioner to grow more for next year.”
