Wood wants unbeaten run

RUGBY

Torquay Athletic’s promotion prospects suffered a setback when they went down 27-15 away to leaders Plymstock Albion Oaks.

The Tics hammered Plymouth Argaum 73-17 seven days earlier.

Match preparations went badly awry during the week when scrum-half Alex Jeffery quit the club over a selection issue – and back-up nine Josh Hunt was not available.

Plymstock shot into a 22-3 half time lead and a second-half fightback was not enough to stave off defeat.

James Wood and Johnny Brown scored tries and Morgan Penrice kicked a conversion to add to a penalty.

That’s three defeats in eight starts for the Tics, who are lagging 10 points off the pace.

“Realistically, we have to go unbeaten for the season if we want to go up this year,” said Wood.

“It is down to the coaches and players to really turn it around.”

On the performance, Wood said: “We came up against a better team on the day.

“Once again we didn’t play with the width and pace we wanted to which played into their hands as they were a big pack.”

Torquay host South Molton this Saturday (2.30pm).

turned in their best performance of the season so far to beat visiting Falmouth 57-3.

Kingsbridge ran in four tries to claim their bonus point and did much as they pleased for the rest of the game.

Jamie Palmer gave Kingsbridge the lead. By half time Ben Newman, Ashley Treeby (2) and Lewis Winzer had gone over. Second-half points were racked up by George Banfield, Jake Vincent, Dan Jarvis and Joe Carey at fly-half.

problems in the Western Counties Division continued with a 34-3 home defeat by promotion-chasing Crediton.

Crediton led 15-3 at the break and added three tries to their tally in the second half.

Midway through the half the game was halted for more than an hour following a serious neck injury to Paignton scrum-half Jack Taylor.

Taylor was placed on a spinal board for his journey to Torbay Hospital where he was kept in overnight for observation. Doctors discovered nothing more serious than heavy bruising and discharged him on Sunday afternoon.
