Meteoric rise puts school in UK top 10

A TORQUAY school has made headlines with its meteoric rise in a national league table.

Torquay Girls’ Grammar School won The Sunday Times South West State Secondary School of the Year award, jumping 35 places in the newspaper’s Parent Power schools guide, which lists the top performing 2,000 schools and colleges in the UK ranked by recent examinatio­n results.

Five Devon schools made the top 10, with two receiving education top award recognitio­n. In the top 10 state secondary schools in the South West, Colyton Grammar

School was ranked second, Torquay Girls’ was ranked third and Torquay Boys’ Grammar School was ranked sixth.

Torquay Girls’ Grammar School has seen its A-Level results increased by 5.9% to 82.6% A* to B grades. The school also saw 70.8% of GCSE receive the top grades of A*/A/9/8/7, compared to 61.7% in 2017.

Parent Power is widely acknowledg­ed as the most authoritat­ive survey of the country’s best schools.
