Bahamas pulls in the passengers on S&C run
JUST over a year after it returned to the main line, LMS Jubilee class 4-6-0 No. 45596 Bahamas hauled a charter from its Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (KWVR) base to Carlisle via the Settlecarlisle (S&C) line on February 22. The train was organised by the KWVR in partnership with West Coast Railways (WCR) and the locomotive’s owner, the Bahamas Locomotive Society (BLS).
BLS chairman Keith Whitmore told Heritage Railway:“i’m delighted to report that the train was virtually soldout. It shows Bahamas remains a very popular locomotive.
“The weather was kind too – we were concerned at one stage, but the track was fine.
“The engine performed superbly and we received compliments about how well it ran and regarding its pristine appearance. These were welcomed by the dedicated support crew, who put in at least three long working days, including preparation and disposal before and after every tour.
“It was the first time we had the selfcleaning smokebox in operation, which resulted in less work for the support crew. Fitted over the winter, it certainly proved its worth.”
Keith added:“the tour went brilliantly, and we would like to thank everyone who travelled with us and came to see us; WCR and Network Rail for accommodating us; the hard working volunteers from both the KWVR and our own organisation; and most of all, the devoted support crew that always go above and beyond to ensure everything runs smoothly.”
The on board raffle for a replica smoke box numberplate, which travelled on Bahamas’ northbound over the S&C was very well supported – raising £900.
Asked if there are any further main line tours lined up or whether any visits to other heritage lines have been confirmed, Keith replied:“i cannot confirm anything yet, but we are in discussions with main line operators and heritage railways alike about Bahamas’ duties over the coming months. I expect the locomotive will be seen around the country this year.”
Noel Hartley, KWVR operations manager, said:“volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Exciting events such as this Bahamas Railtour help us to continue attracting the new generation, one of our current challenges. It’s fantastic that so many of our young and new volunteers were involved in this trip.”
