Swallow flies to the top ahead of NE Region signs
AN InterCity swallow emblem from HST 125 power car
No. 43094 topped a live online railwayana and models sale held by Spicers Auctioneers of Driffield on February 12, with a realisation of £1850.
The emblem was introduced by BR in 1987 on the iconic Class 43 HST to symbolise ‘grace and speed,’ and has become popular among the diesel generation that is becoming an increasingly significant sector within the railwayana movement.
Two BR North Eastern Region enamel signs from an earlier era that each went under the hammer for £900 were a totem from Ilkley station and a waiting room sign, while the leading price among the OO-gauge models was £320 for a Hornby A4 No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley.
A collection of four 5in gauge garden railway petrol locomotives was headed at £700 by Class 23 ‘Baby Deltic’ D5902 that was given the name Sir Thomas Henry. The class on which the model was based was built by English Electric in 1959, and all 10 had been withdrawn by 1971.
