“Brunel's departure”
The famous cigar and top hat silhouette of Isambard Kingdom Brunel (IKB) sets the scene at Didcot Railway Centre, this time on the Broad gauge section of the museum. The replica steam locomotive of 1840-built Fire Fly is artificially backlit with LED lamps and carries a smoke machine in the firebox to create the atmosphere. The rising smoke from the machine travels through the tubes of the engine and out of the chimney, replicating real steam. I asked the re-enactors on the footplate as well as IKB to stand still for the time exposure of three seconds. My challenge here was to block the lighting with the Burlescombe station sign and use the IKB re-enactor’s hat to prevent the light shining into the lens.
