Duke of Gloucester’s return moves closer

- By Gareth Evans

HISTORY was made at South Devon Railway Engineering's Buckfastleigh premises on April 16 when the crank axle was assembled for No. 71000 Duke of Gloucester – a significant milestone for the return of the main line steam icon.

Components, including the wheels, cannon boxes and bearings are now being gathered together and will all be available for assembly to start during May.

Meanwhile, the Duke’s former support coach, Mk.2 BFK coach No. W17041, has been purchased by the Whitwell & Reepham Railway. As reported last issue, the carriage has recently been advertised for sale after BR Mk.1 BSK No. W17015 was acquired from Kinlet Hall Ltd, owner of No. 4936 Kinlet Hall.

No. W17041 is equipped with steam or electric heating, a kitchen, worktop bunk beds and four compartments with first class seats. In addition to minor body repairs, No. W17041 has been fully certified for both the gas and electrical systems prior to sale.

Two contractors have been invited to quote for various options of work to be carried out on No. W17015 to prepare it for use as the Duke of Gloucester’s new support coach.
