St Rollox works to house vintage car collection of Optical Express tycoon?

-

OPTICAL Express tycoon David Moulsdale has bought the former St Rollox Caledonian Railway works for an undisclosed sum.

Mr Moulsdale has set up a holding company, Springburn Depot SPV, and according to former Springburn MP and Caley Campaign Group chairman Paul Sweeney, he is considering using part of the building to house his vintage car collection.

The rail-connected site has been sold by Dutch property group Mileway, and Mr Sweeney wants the Scottish Government to become actively involved in reviving railway engineering on the historic former Caledonian Railway-built works.

A bid made in 2019 by Jeremy Hosking's Locomotive Services Limited (LSL), which planned to create jobs by housing and maintaining heritage trains at the works, was rejected by its owners, Hansteen, in 2020.

Now Mr Sweeney believes that Mr Moulsdale should be encouraged by the Scottish Government to talk to LSL.

Mr Sweeney said: “The new owner has a great opportunity for the works to become involved in railway engineering once again and to restore this activity to its traditional home in Springburn.

“I appeal to both Mr Moulsdale and the Scottish Government to talk to one another and to LSL about a rail revival.”

Mileway said: “We have completed an agreement for the sale of Springburn Railway depot and are sure that this will allow the local community to enjoy the heritage of the site for many years to come.”

Mr Moulsdale, who was born near to the works in Bishopbriggs, has refused to comment so far on his plans for the site.
