“WANT to buy a Quarry Hunslet? Fell off the back of a lorry.”
Actually, that’s not what’s happening here at all – it’s Julian Birley’s repatriated 0-4-0ST Winifred being loaded at the future site of the Bala Lake Railway’s future terminus in Bala itself, following its appearance at the ReRailed event on June 12/13 promoting the line’s extension plans, and which returned steam to the town for the first time since 1965 (see pages 26/27).
It’s reminiscent of the days when the Quarry Hunslets were the staple motive power for the slate industry in North Wales, and would be transferred up and down to and from galleries in the quarries via inclines even steeper than this. We thought this picture was worthy of a caption competition. A book or DVD awaits the reader who comes up with the wittiest line.
