Race the Train makes a return after two-year rest

-

THE Talyllyn Railway’s popular annual ‘Race the Train’ event, which up until 2019 had taken place annually every August bank holiday for 36 years, is back following a two-year suspension due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The race is hosted by the railway but organised each year by Tywyn

Rotary Club. The railway runs the special train for the race, also carrying spectators for the main event – the Rotary Challenge – and also provides rail transport for those participating in the shorter races that begin at intermediate stations further up the line.

During this year’s event held on August 20, a total of 980 people travelled on the special trains and the Rotary Club recorded 437 runners who completed the full 14-mile event, beginning at Tywyn Wharf and returning from Abergynolwyn.

The first runner home, Sullivan Smith, completed the course in a little under one hour and 30 minutes.

The 38th Race the Train will take place next year on Saturday, August 19 and bookings are already being taken at www.racethetrain.com
