Great Central stations make way for HS2 development

-

THE Great Central Railway stationmaster’s house at Calvert was demolished on September 29 to make way for HS2 after being vacant for several years.

The alignment of the former Great Central Railway between just north of Quainton Road via Calvert and through Finmere northwards is being used for HS2.

Calvert station was opened in 1899 and closed to passengers in 1963 and goods in 1964, although fast passenger trains continued to pass through until 1966 when the GR main line was closed. The station buildings themselves had long since been demolished, the track was lifted in 2021, and the platforms were demolished in May.

Meanwhile, the platforms at Finmere, the temporary Coulsdon Old Vehicle Engineering Society railway base, have also gone. With the Finmere station house now shrouded in scaffolding with demolition teams seen on site, its survival is uncertain.

An outbuilding has already been demolished and the roof tiles removed from the main building.
