Hornby launches TT:120 range

-

HORNBY has become the latest manufacturer to join in the resurgence of the 1:120 scale of model railways with perhaps the largest number of models planned for the scale so far.

Known as table-top railways or TT, the new scale for the brand is smaller than the more familiar OO gauge models but still as easily handled by modellers young and old, providing an inbetween for OO and N scale models.

Marketing and product development director Simon Kohler explained: “We have been developing Hornby TT:120 for several years and it represents a substantial investment.

“Hornby TT:120 provides many solutions for those who really want to create a model railway but have little or no space for the larger OO size.

“The hobby is enjoying fresh interest since the Covid-19 lockdown days and there really is no other creative pastime that can provide so much enjoyment.”

Hornby reports that the track for its new scale range is already in stock, with train sets due in time for Christmas.

One area that has prompted discussion is the distribution of the range, being undertaken exclusively by the Margate-based company via a dedicated online service. A new club has also been introduced – Hornby TT:120 Club – offering benefits such as 15% discount on all purchases.

The range of models announced includes an array of different steam and diesel locomotives (including A4 No. 4468 Mallard and A1 No. 4472 Flying Scotsman), carriages (including Pullmans with working table lamps), wagons, and buildings.

Hornby has also announced models that will follow in future phases, including BR class 9F No. 92220 Evening Star and the BR class 31 diesel locomotives, the latter of which had previously been announced by rival manufacturer Heljan, which has since decided to withdraw its plans for the scale.

“Such duplication in a new and so far unknown market produces no winners, only losers,” a statement on the firm’s social media pages read. “We were genuinely excited about the possibilities of this new scale but in the circumstances and with a heavy heart, we are ceasing development of out TT:120 model range. Instead we will focus all our energies on developing more exciting new OO and O gauge model products and supporting the crucial network of UK model railway retailers.”
