Hertfordshire Life Food & Drink Awards
Discover the wonderful venue for this year’s Hertfordshire Life Food and Drink Awards
Henry Moore Studios and Gardens, in our beautiful Hertfordshire countryside near Bishop’s Stortford, is the former home of one of Britain’s most well-known artists. Sculptor Henry Moore moved to the picturesque hamlet of Perry Green in 1940, having been bombed out of his London studio. He remained there for the rest of his life, creating some of his most famous sculptures in the on-site studios.
Moore’s estate is now home to the charitable foundation he founded in 1977. It is a stunning sculpture garden, featuring many of his iconic bronzes. As a visitor you can easily spend a whole day exploring over 70 acres of gardens and rolling fields. Take a guided tour of Hoglands, the artist’s family home where he lived for over 40 years, and find out more about his creative processes in his fascinating studios where the origins of his monumental sculptures are evident in the hundreds of small maquettes that line the shelves.
The studios and gardens also feature changing annual exhibitions of Moore’s works, often shown in contrast to artists who influenced or who were influence by him. This year
Out of the Block: Henry Moore Carvings looks at his works in wood and stone over seven decades of his career and features a photographic display from the foundation’s extensive archive.
Next year, you will be able to enjoy the largest exhibition of Henry Moore’s drawings in more than 40 years. The exhibition will showcase his exceptional talent as a draughtsman and will feature stunning works from across his career – including examples of his famous First World War ‘Shelter’ drawings.
In addition to the artworks, Henry Moore Studios and Gardens is home to a café run by the team from Hopley’s in nearby Much Hadham. Hopley’s has built a reputation for delicious cakes, fresh salads, homebaked quiches and hearty sandwiches, all of which the team are now serving in our recently opened visitor centre.
