Hitchin’s Cap­si­cana has bowled over the judges at the Great Taste Awards

Cap­si­cana’s awards cabinet is fill­ing up. Fol­low­ing on from suc­cess at last year’s Great Taste Awards, the au­then­tic Latin Amer­i­can food brand has scooped a fan­tas­tic three stars, plus a Golden Fork award, for its Brazil­ian Chilli and Co­conut Cook Sauce at the 2018 event.

Or­gan­ised by the Guild of Fine Food, more than 400 judges blind taste over 12,500 prod­ucts and award the best be­tween one and three stars. This year the top three-star grade was given to only 197 prod­ucts, while a Golden Fork was given to just 16.

‘We found our­selves lick­ing the plate and would ab­so­lutely love to try this again,’ the judges said. ‘The heat is well judged and co­conut fra­grant. The spices are fresh and there is an el­e­ment of sour­ness; over­all a new, ex­cit­ing and well-judged prod­uct.’

A lover of chillis, Ben Jack­son founded Hitchin-based Cap­si­cana in 2009. He said of the award: ‘It’s great to see that peo­ple en­joy our sauces so much and ap­pre­ci­ate all the pas­sion that goes into mak­ing them.’

His prod­ucts, avail­able in Waitrose and Whole Foods, are packed full of au­then­tic in­gre­di­ents, so you can make orig­i­nal and great tast­ing recipes at home. And he has re­cently ex­panded the range, adding a Quick and Easy Gua­camole Mix and two sea­son­ing mixes; mak­ing them the per­fect store cup­board es­sen­tial.
