HISTORY buffs are inviting people to take old and unusual photos of Hinckley past to a scanning session at a town centre church.

Members of the online history group Hinckley District Past and Present want to add to their archive of images of the town by making digital copies of pictures people have treasured over the years.

They might feature fetes, community events, old or long-gone borough buildings, sports teams or street scenes.

Whatever their format, copies can be made and the images uploaded to the group’s Facebook site to be shared and referred to for posterity.

A scanning session will be held at St Mary’s Church in the town centre on Saturday June 18 from 10am until noon.

Similar sessions will then be held on the third Saturday of each month until December.

Scanning will be done on the day, while people wait, so original pictures can be taken straight home again for safe-keeping.

Paul and Sue Gardner, who run the popular Facebook group say they have been really pleased with the response so far and have already had pictures taken to them that have never been seen before.

Paul said: “A lot have come from family collections that have been sitting wrapped up in people’s sideboards and cabinets.

“Some people have promised to get up into their attics to dig out their pictures for us.

“The pictures can be anything that is of local interest, like gatherings or presentations, carnivals, sports teams or street scenes.

“We can scan whatever format is brought into us including negatives and slides.

“The great thing about these sessions is that we can scan your pictures while you wait, have a cup of coffee in the church coffee bar and then take your pictures home safely.

“Some of the promised pictures to come sound fantastic and we can’t wait to be able to share them on our Facebook group.”

The group, which was formed in February 2015, already has more than 3,000 online members and has donated more than £800, raised from social events, to good causes in the area.

Members meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at The Greyhound Inn on New Buildings and new members will always be welcome.
