Tallest peaks in three countries to be tackled

TEACHERS and staff from a Hinckley school are to climb the tallest three mountains in England, Scotland and Wales in just 24 hours to raise money for charity.

Ten colleagues from Sketchley Hill Primary School will tackle the National Three Peaks challenge from Saturday to Sunday.

They will attempt to scale Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales in 24 hours - and be back in time to teach their classes on Monday morning.

The gruelling challenge involves climbing more than 3,000 metres, walking at least 25 miles and driving 1,000 miles with very little sleep.

The group are hoping to raise £1,000 for the The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) charity, which supports young people in “self-improvement” challenges.

The trek is being led by Year 6 teacher Penny Masser, as part of her DofE Diamond Challenge to mark the 60th anniversary of the scheme.

She said: “The team have been training hard including practise climbs at Scafell and Snowdon and walking at night using head torches.

“We are really excited about what we know will be a tough challenge and we are looking forward to sharing our experiences with the staff and pupils at school who have been really supportive during our training.”

The group consists of teachers Mrs Masser, Deb- bie Moore and foundation stage teacher Rachel Stocks, deputy head Jason Cader, support staff Carole Boulton, Bekkie Adams, Carly West and Sharon Ames, and admin worker Julie Mason.

Headteacher Philippa Campbell and teacher James Tarrant will be driving the team from each mountain.

The group will drive to Carlisle on Friday night after school and travel to Fort William on Saturday to climb Ben Nevis, the tallest mountain in the UK.

They are hoping to tackle Scafell Pike in the Lake District at 2am on Sunday and be in Wales for 11am to complete Snowdon before the 3pm deadline.
