A GROUP of ladies from Hinckley went on a pleasure cruise and ended up shipwrecked.

Hinckley and District Stewardesses were on a trip along the River Nene in Northampton this week in 1966, and while cruising along the waterway their barge’s rudder fell off.

Their bus had to come to collect them from where they had run aground - but the report says they carried on enjoying their day out on the river until it arrived, despite being stuck on the bank.

An ageing dog had his photo in the paper.

Timmy the terrier had turned 16 years old and was rewarded with a feature in the Hinckley Times.

The report said: “He is a charming, frisky little chap and enjoys his fun and a scamper round the lawn.”

Then three-year-old Caroline Mannion was in the paper this week for winning a prize.

She had entered the “Junior Lovelies” competition at Butlins in Clacton-on-Sea and placed first. VANDALS went on the rampage, spraying offensive graffiti including swastikas on cars and homes in Hinckley.

The attack left property defaced with swear words and slogans and created a huge amount of damage.

One, scrawled on a Ford Focus, read: “I want this car, so I do this, haha.”

Wonder lotion inventor Brian Bennett was back in Hinckley to talk to the public about his products.

Mr Bennett dropped into Asda to discuss the three lotions he developed himself initially from his home in Nuneaton.

Actor and Sapcote resident Bill Maynard helped to entertain the crowds.

Ultima Sportscars smashed its own world record for sprinting to 100mph and back to zero again in its Ultima GTR sportscar.

Driven by director Richard Marlow, the Hinckley built and designed Ultima GTR set a world record time of 9.4 seconds for the 0-1000mph sprint.

The GTR scorched from 0-100mph in 5.3 seconds and back to zero in 3.6 secs.
