HINCKLEY Carnival had been held this week and a record amount had been raised.

The popular event’s total had not been finalised, but was expected to top £1,000 for good causes - more than double the 1965 total.

The paper also reported it was the biggest ever, and the most colourful too - although we only have black and white photos from the day!

Highlights from the procession which mixed “the picturesque with the burlesque” were 18-yearold queen Linda Booth, a fashions of the world float, Noddy, a black and white minstrels procession, cavemen, some St Trinian’s girls, a message from the International Order of Good Templars that drinking stops thinking, and a large amount of World Cup themed floats.

After the procession, there was a fete including a baby show, a demonstration of model aircraft, a band contest, a six-a-side football match, children’s fancy dress, pony rides, “skittling for the pig” (whatever that was), and a model railway which could be ridden. PLANS for a 70-bed hotel in the centre of Hinckley had been turned down.

Members of the Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council’s planning committee and others said the proposed change of use of the top two floors of the High Cross building was to be welcomed but they could not allow it to go ahead without dedicated car parking provision.

A jet-setting mother and daughter from Hinckley were all set to enjoy another taste of paradise after they won again on the National Lottery travel quiz.

Sue Millhouse, 53, and daughter Phillipa, 20, had spent a week sampling the high-life in Hawaii when they were beamed live to the programme.

Sue won the second dream holiday, to Zanzibar, and the duo were set to take it up in January.

Residents were demanding action after another crash at a Hinckley accident blackspot. They wanted traffic calming measures on Coventry Road. The latest collision saw a car smash into the railings by the canal bridge.
