Gin revival is celebrated at village pub

-

A VILLAGE pub is looking to revive one of the most quintessential British drinks just in time for summer.

The revival of gin is going to be just the tonic for the Crab and Cow’s discerning drinkers, with a special tasting night scheduled for the Leire hostelry.

There has been a resurgence in the juniperbased spirit’s popularity with new names and fresh flavours being produced to tempt fans and to celebrate the pub will be hosting a Burleighs gin tasting evening on Thursday June 30.

This will showcase its locally distilled Signature London Dry Gin, which was inspired by a walk in Burleigh Wood where master distiller Jamie Baxter happened to come across silver birch, dandelion, burdock, elderberry and iris - producing ideas for a new gin recipe.

As well as Burleighs, famous brands such as beefeater, Bombay Sapphire and Tanqueray will be featured alongside Haymans Old Tom, Monkey 47 Dry, Stafford Cornish and William Chase.

ABV’s range from 40% to 48%.

A spokesman said: “Gin was so popular in 18th century London it was blamed for everything from crime to prostitution and even falling birth rates. Once considered a cheap medicinal cure for indigestion, the drink quick- ly earned the nickname ‘mother’s ruin’.

“But now the drink is back.

“Each of our craft gins we hand-select have their own distinct flavour with a fascinating story behind each one too. With the huge differences between gins our extremely knowledgeable bar staff will be able to guide customers through to their tipple of choice.”
