PUPILS who have raised money to help schoolchildren in India have been hearing how their support has made a difference.

Father Dominic Jayakumar, who oversees the spending of money raised for the Nevett Fund for Children, visited schools in Hinckley to explain how funds have been helping young pupils in Tamil Nadu.

He was given a tour of St Peter’s RC Primary School where he thanked Year 6 pupils for a recent donation of £730.

At Heathfield Academy, Fr Dominic spoke to the Pondipeeps, the school’s group that supports work at a school in Pondicherry, and showed them a short video followed by a question and answer session.

And at Westfield Infant School he led a whole school assembly, teaching the children a new song and enjoying a performance of one their own favourites, sung for him.

His visit ended with a visit to St Peter’s RC Churchyard where he offered prayers for Nevett Fund members who have died.

Phil Nevett from the fund, who accompanied Fr Dominic on his visits, said: “Fr Dominic runs our projects in rural Tamil Nadu State, India.

“We send out the money and he distributes it then monitors projects and individual recipients and reports back to us regularly.

“He was visiting Europe to thank various groups for their continuing support.”

Fr Dominic said he would welcome anyone wanting to visit the Nevett Fund projects in India, including gap-year students willing to spend some time helping in the schools supported by the charity, or mature students.
