Martial artists taste European success

-

MARTIAL artists from around Hinckley and Burbage have earned black belts, raised their games and come away with a raft of medals in a European competition.

Kuk Sool Won students who train with Burbage couple David and Louise Watts at their martial arts school in Bedworth benefited from visit of Kuk Sool Won Grandmaster In Hyuk Suh from America.

To become a black belt (Jo Kyo Nym or JKN) in the art, students must be tested twice in the presence of a Grandmaster.

Three students passed that test while school owner and main instructor Mr Watts tested for his final time to become a fourth degree instructor (Sa Bum Nim, or SBN).

Six black belt students and above from the school then took part in a European tournament, winning 16 medals between them, representing placings from first to fourth.

Of the 64 school from acrosss Europe that took part, the Bedworth-based Kuk Sool Won team came 23rd.

JKN Louise Watts, a first degree black belt from Brookside, said: “Kuk Sool Won is a relatively new martial art which combines all aspects of traditional Korean martial arts including self defence techniques, sparring, weapons and more.”

Classes are held at Nicholas Chamberlaine School in Bedworth.
