EVENTS are ramping up as part of Leicester Animal Aid’s 60th birthday celebrations during the year they are backed by the borough’s first citizen.

Chosen as a civic charity by Mayor of Hinckley and Bosworth, Councillor Richard Allen, the pet rescue and rehoming organisation has a busy summer ahead with plenty of local links.

During June a summer mini market and tea party was supported by Hinckley’s Tesco store as part of Leicester Animal Aid’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

The event was held at the centre near Huncote and more than £2,000 was raised to help the dogs and cats cared for by the charity.

During the day visitors were able to browse around a variety of stalls, including a giant jumble, books, DVDS, games, toys, bric-a-brac, linens, charity shop and an extra special tea party.

A spokesman said: “Tesco Hinckley very kindly helped to sponsor the event by supplying items for the tea party. The store is an ongoing supporter of Leicester Animal Aid and regularly collect dog and cat food items to us in store and deliver them to us.

“Thank you to all of you that came to the event and for your support. We wouldn’t be able to help the dogs and cats who are being cared for at the cen- tre without your help.”

The charity is also holding a dog reunion and sponsored walk on the July 17 between 11am and 3pm at Burbage Common.

All canines which have been rescued and rehomed by the centre - and their owners of course - are invited along as are any other dog lovers and their pets.

The event is free and will feature music and entertainment and refreshments will be on sale.

A dog parade will showcase Leicester Animal Aid’s current clutch of hounds, including seniors, terriers, collies, springers and Labradors to Dobermans, Rottweilers and Great Danes.

A spokesman said: “All rescue dogs are welcome and we’d love to hear more about people’s dogs and their stories. All entries in the parade will receive a gift and a photographer will be taking photos available to purchase at a later date.”

The sponsored walk has both 0.7 mile and 1.7 mile routes which can be completed as many times as people like. Water will be available en route and participants get a goody bag.

Fancy dress is actively encouraged and a minimum sponsorship of £5 is suggested.
