Post Office proposal for market town

The area was left without a service last year

MOVES are being made to reopen a post office in Market Bosworth.

The town’s former post office closed in November last year after being run by husband and wife Brian and Lynne Eveson for nearly four decades.

No-one came forward to take over the business and although a small post box was put up in the market square, no other replacement service was offered to the busy market town.

Since then community campaigners, including Market Bosworth parish councillors and a church leader, have been working to see if a service can be offered in a different way.

They are to hold a public meeting in St Peter’s Parish Hall on Park Street on Monday July 11 at 6pm to put forward some suggestions and to sound out the wider community feeling on the matter.

Canon David Jennings, former Rector of Burbage who now lives in the town, is one of the group that has been investigating potential new scheme.

He said: “For the people and businesses of Bosworth and the surrounding villages, the closure of Market Bosworth Post Office was more than just an inconvenience. “It was a serious blow. “The Post Office sought to find another suitable venue and location but without success.

“A small group of individuals has been meeting and exploring other options to re-instate a post office within the community. a

“Meetings have also taken place with officials from the Post Office.

“The working group believes it has a viable option but would need some support from the community.”

It is being suggested that a post office could be set up in the parish hall.

Post Office representatives have investigated the suitability of the building and cost implications.

Bosworth MP David Tredinnick has also visited the venue and given his support for the plan to be further explored.

Canon Jenning said: “It is time to get our post office back.

“The group now feels that it would be helpful to have an open and public meeting to share progress, consider ideas, and seek wider support for the project, including necessary sustainability.

“I hope as many people as possible will come along to the meeting to hear proposals and to offer suggestions, ideas and support.”
