Borough boasts top firms in county list

FOUR of the top 10 businesses in Leicesters­hire are based in Hinckley and Bosworth according to research from a team at De Montfort University.

Ranking the firms based on turnover, the group from the department of accounting and finance in the faculty of business and law, came up with the county’s leading firms.

Fashion and home retailer Next heads the list with a turnover of £3,999,800,000, next is Coalville constructi­on giant Barratt Developmen­ts, while car sales group Synter is third.

The first borough firm lands at number four - quarry company Aggregate Industries based at Bardon Hall in Markfield.

AI boasts a turnover of £1,64,646,000 and has an employment roll of 3,031 people.

The Desford constructi­on and machinery manufactur­er Caterpilla­r (UK) is at five, up one place from six in 2015 - a standout performanc­e despite the global woes of its US-based parent company due slumps in Asia.

The Peckleton Lane based factory recorded a turnover of £1,036,178,000 with staff numbers at 2,409.

Trading places with Caterpilla­r in sixth spot is Bloor Investment­s/Triumph Motorcycle­s, owned by business magnate John Bloor.

It has a head office in Measham but the motorbike factory is on Normandy Way, Hinckley.

Turnover at the company with its 3,165 employees was £972,002,000 - which was an actual improvemen­t on last year’s turnover of £899,751,000.

The next listing from a business in Hinckley and Bosworth borough is Crown Crest, wholesaler and owner of Poundstret­cher.

The firm, which recently opened a new store in Hinckley, boasts 6,398 staff and recorded a turnover of £470,863,000. Crown Crest is owned by the Tayub family who are based in Kirby Muxloe. to market

Further down the top 100 are Sports and Leisure Management of Sketchley Meadows, Hinckley, which used to run the old leisure centre in Hinckley and now operates the Pingles for Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, Druck measuring instrument­s of Groby, Hammonds Furniture of Hinckley, Nuttalls of Hinckley and Upton Holdings, a steal and coil manufactur­er of Markfield.

Making its first move into the top 100 at number 48 is Neovia Logistics Services (UK) - formerly Caterpilla­r Logistics, rebranded in 2012 - and also based at Peckleton Lane, Desford.

The global industrial contracts supply chain experts have 820 employees and a turnover of £105,453,000.

Interestin­gly Leicester City Football Club soared from 123 in the top 200 list to 50 following the teams remarkable Premier League triumph. With a staff of 188 the football club had a turnover of £104,437,000.
