THE ASHBY Canal burst into life for Shackerstone’s Tuesday evening members contest.

Fished along the Poplars length, match winner Ray Brunt recorded the best winning weight since last year catching two decent tench and a number of small bream to finish with 10lb 14oz.

Runner-up Jock Nicholson also had bream to weigh 4lb 3oz.

Andy Morton finished third with a 2lb 10oz catch of small bream.

Higham Lane’s spring series continued with a second win in three days at the venue for Andy Findley.

Fishing the pellet feeder on peg 22, Andy landed 93lb 9oz of carp.

Rich Wells finished second landing eight big carp from the margins on peg 4 to weigh 76lb 11oz.

Dave Hurlston fished the feeder to take third place with 75lb, although a slight technical hitch - he spent 30 minutes with the top half of his hook on the hair rig missing - prevented him from finishing higher.

Measham’s Wednesday evening contest fished along the canal at Snarestone also produced some excellent catches as John Johnson netted a fine 13lb 1oz net of bream from the Globe length to win.

Ian Baker came second with 5lb 11oz with Matt Hodgetts taking third place with 3lb 2oz.

Sunday’s Lychgate Fisheries open match fished a lot better as the weather improved from Saturday’s contest.

Aaron Morton came second with 74lb 11oz from peg 74.

Paul T Twigger was third with 62lb 4oz while Colin Chapman came fourth with 43lb.

Rain and strong winds in Maynes midweek open made conditions very hard, with several umbrellas being broken.

Alby Beehl took the honours, fishing sweetcorn close to the island on Lake Two to finish with 44lb 8oz.

Results: Lake One; First Alan Wilson peg 37 42lb 4oz. Lake Two: First Alby Beehl peg 12.

Ashby Canal legend Doug Dimbleby has won most of the trophies on offer by both Shackerstone and Measham Angling Clubs over the years and he went one step closer to a clean sweep after winning Shackerstone’s members Richardson Cup contest for the first time.

Fished along Gopsall Wharf Doug landed 3lb 4oz of small roach on bread punch.

Alan Dixon was second with a 2lb 7oz catch of roach and perch while Pete Billington finished third with 1lb 14oz.

In form Pete White took the honours in Mill on the Soar’s Tuesday open match, landing 77lb 2oz of carp and bream from peg 31.

Terry Sanderson came second with 35lb 12oz with Tom Watt finishing third from peg 6 (again) with 24lb 3oz.

It was cold wet and windy for Saturday’s Lychgate Fisheries open and catches matched the weather.

Terry Brindley stuck it out for carp on peg 41, landing five to win with 25lb 2oz, also qualifying for the Lychomania final.

Colin Chapman lost several fish, which could have won the match if landed, but he had to settle for second place with 22lb 10oz.

Kev Dales finished third with 20lb 14oz.

Thursday’s Higham Lane Fishery open was won by Andy Findley with a 69lb 7oz catch from peg 3.
