Twelves is number one as British track champion

-

VETERAN cyclist Mick Twelves added to his crowded trophy cabinet at the weekend after being named the over 50 British Track Cycling Champion.

The Hinckley rider, who is already a multi-champion on road, scooped the 10km point to point trophy in what was his first time racing on track for more than 30 years.

The 50-year-old also secured third place in the 10km scratch race to complete a successful day for Coventry-based Team Jewson-MI Racing-Polypipe.

Teammate Derrick Woodings, 76, managed to do the double by winning both the 10km point to point championship and the 10km scratch championship for riders 75 and ever.

The ex-professional and double British 100m time trial champion has been with Team MI Racing for more than 15 years.

Meanwhile, Ian Cooper finished third in the 40 plus scratch championship.

Elsewhere victories came fast for the team, with Hinckley rider Kirby Bennett, who is back racing following an eye operation, winning the mountain bike series race at East Carlton Country Park.

Teammate Peter Busby, from Coventry, finished in second.

Trike specialist Garry Guntrip set a new personal best time for 25 miles at an event at Shrewsbury, finishing in one hour and 51 seconds - beating his record by a minute-and-a-half.

Members of the youth academy were also in a winning form.

Callum Twelves won the Under-12s circuit race at Curbrough, near Lichfield.

At Mallory Park, Josh Giddings won a time trial and Owen Lightfoot won a circuit race for the Under14s, while Lotta Mansfield finished second in both races.

Overall the team won 14 trophies in two weeks.

They will hope to add to that tally next weekend at the Omloop van der Dries Dorpen event in Fleckno, Warwickshire.

Mick Twelves will saddle up again, along with team mate Phil Blacker, to compete against 80 riders from across the UK.
