A RECORD number of racers took part in this year’s Soap Box Derby - despite the debut of a new ramp obstacle.

Thousands lined the streets as 40 teams from various businesses and groups across the town and beyond hurtled down Castle Street to be crowned fastest vehicle.

There was the new addition of a jump to this year’s track for any racers feeling brave enough to take to the sky to shave off a few seconds.

John Ward, the former general manager of Mallory Park circuit, compered events.

Team Nissan knocked Jaguar Apprentices off their perch as fastest single time of the day and overall fastest team.

The Best Seat in the House Team One received fastest single time of the day award in the Junior category.

Steve Wegerif, chairman of race organiser Hinckley BID, was celebrating his seventh race.

He said: “It was very enjoyable day and my first as head of Hinckley BID, although it was my seventh overall.

“There was a record number of cars, and over half the cars attempted the jump!

“We’re very grateful for everyone who showed up and got involved, and in particular to the Mayor and his Lady for their support and staying throughout to cheer the teams on.”

Other winners on the day included AQATA Showers with the best turned out soap box and crew prize, Clark Shoes and Hinckley and Arabian Nights with the best novelty soap box and Morgan, part of team MG’s, with the most enthusiastic junior award.

Further details regarding official times, footfalls and which team raised the most for charity will be revealed in the next few weeks.
