Fight to save The Big Pit to continue

-

PROTESTORS turned out in force ahead of a public consultation on developing Hinckley’s The Big Pit.

Core members of The Big Pit Resistance Group were joined by scores of concerned residents.

The event, at the Ashby Tavern, was called to discuss plans by Orbit Housing to build 60 homes on the flooded clay pit.

Planning permission for the infill operations was given on appeal more than a year ago despite opposition.

Housing association Orbit will need to submit a detailed application to Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council for the construction of the properties and has arranged a public consultation day for January 19.

Anne Pendlebury, from The Big Pit Resistance Group, said: “Over 70 people attended. The bar was packed as discussions were held about the proposal.

“Feelings ran high, about the recent ravaging of the site, as trees and plants had been ripped from the ground and those living around continued to express concerns about the plans to build 60 houses on this local environmental treasure. It was noted that the pipistrelle bats, once a common sight had not been seen since the devastation.”

Numerous concerns were raised about the infilling and the potential 75 lorries travelling to the site each day.

People were also worried about the lasting traffic impact of another housing development.

However flooding was the main issue of the night, particularly as details were revealed about the new drainage system set to be installed by Severn Trent at Island Close and the fact The Big Pit was fed by various historical springs.

Anne added: “It was pointed out that Orbit was an ethical company and should be made aware of the strength of feeling about this site and the concerns regarding the environment, noise and fumes from the infill operation at the centre of a busy residential area and next to the cemetery and the very real and current concerns of flooding.

“Many people volunteered to collect signatures for the petition now numbering over 1,200.

I think we were all pleased to see the meeting conclude with a positive attitude that Hinckley would continue to fight for The Big Pit.”

• Orbit Housing is holding a public consultation event from 2pm to 7pm on January 19 at Ashby Road Sports Club.
