OAP flats to be brought up to scratch

Overhaul for flat complex

A WARDEN controlled old people’s flat complex looks set to get a £1.9 million overhaul to improve tenants’ standard of living.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council aims to modernise Ambion Court in Market Bosworth to make it more attractive to pensioners.

The 1970s building contains 25 studio flats and four one bed flats for rent by older people.

There is also a warden’s flat.

A report to the most recent scrutiny committee outlined plans and their rationale.

Councillors were told: “There are essential works needed to the building which will require significant financial outlay.

“The studio flats do not have their own bathrooms and therefore while the location is excellent and current residents are happy at the scheme, vacancies are becoming harder to let as the accommodation does not meet the expectations of modern sheltered housing.”

Approval was given in July for remodelling of the block as extending or rebuilding it were not feasible.

The new complex will consist of 17 one bed flats and seven two bed flats featuring bigger kitchens and their own level access shower rooms.

There will also be two guest rooms with interlinked communal bathrooms and a bath suitable for people with reduced mobility.

This will allow guests to freshen up and bathe while also doubling up as an extra facility for residents.

The upgrade will also include new heating and wiring, windows and doors, fire alarm, lift and revamped, accessible gardens with seating.

Tenants will be able to influence kitchen types and colour schemes, choosing from a list with the most popular being used as a ‘one size fits all’.

A planning application is expected this year with work starting in the summer for an early 2018 completion.
