Four years in a row for Burbage primary school
SKETCHLEY Hill Primary School in Burbage won a regional sports competition for the fourth year in a row.
The annual competition at Saffron Lane Sports Stadium in Leicester brought together 32 schools from across the Hinckley and Bosworth area.
Events included sprint and relay, 400m and 800m races, as well as a long jump and howler throw.
Sketchley Hill took a team of 33 children aged between eight and 11 to bag the trophy yet again.
Year 6 teacher and PE coordinator Penny Masser said: “We are absolutely delighted.
“We have a committed and enthusiastic team of athletes who have been training each lunchtime with us and at our after-school athletes club to perfect their ‘baton changes’ in the relays.
“Their commitment and hard work paid off with many seamless changes on the day and some excellent performances in the field, long distance and sprint events too.”
Last month a football team from the school reached the final of the Rice Bowl cup, a competition for Leicestershire and Rutland primary schools.
They narrowly lost 3-2 to Elizabeth Woodville School, but were delighted to get beyond the qualifying rounds for the first time.
The school also won the annual swimming gala for the Hinckley area, at Hinckley Leisure Centre in Argents Mead, in March.
This was the second year in a row the school has won the competition.
It also contributed crosscountry athletes for the Hinckley team at the county cross country championships, at Prestwold Hall, which the Hinckley team won.
The school’s swimming team will be back in action at the Leicestershire Summer Games.
Ms Masser said: “This year has been unprecedented. We are immensely proud of our achievements.
“It is as a result of the hard work, enthusiasm and commitment of our pupils who love the chance to participate in competitive sports and also the commitment of our staff.”
Year 2 teacher Debbie Moore coordinates PE activities, while Year 4 teacher James Tarrant manages and trains the football team.
Headteacher Philippa Campbell is also very supportive and keen for pupils to get involved in the sports activities on offer.
