Race for life events raise £2.5K
A VILLAGE school raised more than £2,540 for Cancer Relief UK by taking part in a Race for Life.
Pupils of Barwell CE Academy past and present were joined by parents, grandparents, siblings and friends for the fundraising run which involved people from across the community.
As well as collecting sponsorship for the race, schoolchildren added to the money raised by selling cakes, washing cars and organising competitions and raffles.
The grand total of their endeavours was announced at an end of year sports assembly at which a cheque for the amount was presented to a representative of the charity.
Class teacher and PE co-ordinator at Barwell CE Academy Oliv- ia Morris, whose idea it was to get involved in the Race for Life campaign, said it had generated interest among families across the village.
She said: “So many of our school community have been affected by the illness and it is something that is close to many families’ hearts.
“The children were particularly inspired by the fact that they could be the future researchers and lifesavers of tomorrow and wanted to do something about it.
“The event was a huge success and brought the whole community together.
“The messages on people’s tops were very emotional and reminded us of why we were doing it - and yet the fancy dress and the atmosphere were uplifting.”
