Pupil’s pan-fried recipe for success
YOUNG chef Cameron Overton is preparing to do culinary battle in a district round of a Rotary Club competition.
The Year 10 student at Dixie Grammar School in Market Bosworth was one of 53 young hopefuls vying for the chance of progressing to the next stage of the Rotary Young Chef contest.
They were whittled down to six finalists based on a scone-baking challenge taste-tested by teachers, then given the task of preparing and serving a two-course healthy meal for two, costing less than £10, in two hours.
Cameron’s winning combination of pan-fried sea-bass with crab mayonnaise followed by carrot cake earned him a place in the district heat to be held in February next year.
A win there would take him to a regional round and further success could see him in the national finals of the competition which is run by Rotary International across Great Britain and Ireland, and sponsored by olive oils branded Filippo Berio.
Judges, from the Rotary Club of Hinckley Ambion and Dixie staff said Year 9 student Megan Mears came “a very close” second, with Year 8 pupil Daniel Kennedy third.
Fellow finalists Year 8 pupils Elliot Breadon and Christian Olds, and Year 11 student Emmie Deer were all praised for their efforts.
Dixie head of home economics Clare Hannaghan praised pupils’ effort and enthusiasm and the high standard of food and presentation.
She also thanked parents for their support and encouragement.
Rotarian Michael Jewkes who awarded prizes said that the standard was high and the judging extremely close.
