Five years and rising for community club
A COMMUNITY club is to celebrate five years of fun and fellowship for older, vulnerable and isolated people living in some of the farthest flung parts of the borough.
Markfield Mayflower Club, which meets at Markfield Community Centre on Mayflower Close on Wednesdays from 2pm to 4pm, will be holding an anniversary event on January 24.
The celebration will be a Burns-style supper with haggis and ‘neeps’ followed by Scottish shortbread and quite possibly a dram or two of whiskey.
After eating, the Mayflower Magical Music Band will lead a singalong of Celtic songs and melodies.
Invitiations have been sent to people and organisations who have supported the group during the past half-decade.
Club leader Ron Grantham said: “We have come a long and successful way since we first opened our doors on a stormy day in 2103.
“So many people and organisations have helped and supported the success of the project either financially or otherwise that members felt that they would like to invite them all along to our celebration party.”
The event will also give supporters a chance to see how the club runs and get an idea of what it has achieved since its launch.
Open to people from the village and surrounding areas, it hosts talks and activities which aim to encourage members to have fun and socialise as well as to get help and information.
Admission costs £1.50 including refreshments.
