Care homes do battle for new league title

-

RESIDENTS of care homes in Hinckley and Burbage are doing battle in a new sporting league inspired by the Olympics.

Men and women at Hinckley House on Tudor Road, The Ashton on John Street and Moat House in Burbage are competing in a six week tournament of speciallydesigned activities before a winning team is crowned after Easter.

Care home games were originally introduced across the borough as part of a Leicestershire and Rutland Sport initiative following the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Now, on the back of the Winter Olympics in South Korea, three homes are upping their game and challenging each other for an overall title.

Known as the Twilight Games, events include tar- get beanbag throwing and speed dice rolling, along with a form of low-level basketball and skittles.

The aim is for the activities to involve as many residents as possible including those suffering from dementia.

Each week, each of the homes will stage the same event and will pass on their scores to Liz Causon, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council’s physical activity development officer, who is co-ordinating the league along with inclusion officer Mark Beeby.

Home teams will be awarded three points for a winning score, two points for coming second and one point for coming third.

The home accruing the most points at the end of the six weeks will be named league champion.
