Delays for airport traffic in May as M1 closes

-

JOURNEYS from East Midlands Airport could be hampered by a two day closure of a stretch of the M1.

Part of the motorway will be closed for 43 hours from Friday May 11 until Sunday May 13 as part of the Segro Logistics Park construction.

Falling under the East Mid- lands Gateway project, the southbound carriageway will be closed between Junction 23a and Junction 24 from 10pm on May 11.

The northbound carriageway between the same junctions will then close at midnight.

Both will re-open at 3pm the following Sunday (May 13).

The closure is to allow work on two projects to take place.

The Kegworth Bypass bridge is to be launched over the motorway, south of the Ashby Road Bridge, as part of the logistics park construction.

A separate project will be carried out at the same time to avoid a further full closure of the motorway.

Highways England will take the opportunity to carry out essential bridge waterproofing works south of J23A. Traffic will be diverted on the A453 for the duration of the closure.

A spokesman for Segro Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway project said: “As the M1 is one of the UK’s busiest motorways, we expect significant congestion and delays along this diversion route and the motorway therefore we advise drivers avoid this area if possible and allow for extra time for their journey – in particular if travelling to East Midlands Airport.”
