Drivers say new speed hump is too high

DRIVERS have had a rough ride getting over a steep new set of speed humps installed in Hinckley.

One motorist had to pull over and check his car after it scraped the road as he went over the bump, on Southfield Road at the junction with Hurst Road.

The driver, who lives on Southfield Road and works in Hinckley, said: “The whole front of my car slumped down and I had sparks flying off. “I was watching other cars go over and they really had to slow down.

“If you don’t know the area and you go over it at 30mph, you could easily damage your car or a lorry could jackknife there.”

The new road furnishings were installed by Westleigh Partnerships, who developed the new affordable housing estate on Southfield Road.

Drivers said the previous humps had a much gentler gradient and could be driven over at 20mph.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire County Council said: “Westleigh Partnerships Ltd have carried out a series of highway improvements along Southfield Road during March.

“The improvements are a requirement in association with housing development.

“As part of the works the existing speed table at the junction of Southfield Road and Hurst Road has been extended to incorporate a new pedestrian crossing point.

“Following comments about the new ramp we will investigate and check to make sure it complies with the required standard.”

In contrast to the complaints about the new hump, Southfield Road resident Susan Chrisopher said she was glad to see they had a harsh gradient, as cars often far exceed the speed limit and overtake on the road.

She said: “We don’t need these ones taken out, we need more of them.

“They have speed humps all along Brookside in Burbage, so why shouldn’t we have some too?”
