Boxing legends are making their way to town for event

-

THREE of British boxing’s all-time greats are coming together to recount their time in the ring and the battles they had during what is regarded as a golden era for the sport.

Including Nigel Benn, Steve Collins and Michael Watson, the ‘3 Kings’ event is taking place on May 25 at the Sketchley Grange Hotel in Burbage.

In association with Kong Events, boxing fans will be in for an evening of top quality boxing chat while the three legends of the super-middle weight division will share their memories and stories plus the highs and lows of their time in professional boxing.

Paul Noble, general manager at the hotel said: “Nigel, Steve and Michael were all marvellous fighters who lit up the sport and arguably our lives during the 1980s. There’s no doubt they are boxing royalty.

“They were at the height of what was a true golden age of both British and world super middleweight boxing and to have all three on stage at the same time will no doubt provide a great night for fans of both boxing and sport in general.”

Nicknamed “The Dark Destroyer” Nigel Benn was renowned for his formidable punching power and aggressive fighting style. Ranked as the fourth best British super-middleweight boxer of all time he held two world championship titles.

The most successful Irish boxer in professional boxing history, Steve Collins, who was known as ‘The Celtic Warrior’, won the WBO super-middleweight title and defended it seven times.

Perhaps being the most naturally gifted of the three boxers, Michael Watson’s career was tragically cut short as a result of nearfatal injury sustained during a loss to Chris Eubank for the WBO super-middleweight title in 1991.

Paul added: “What will make the evening even more intriguing is the fact that all three were around during an era when there was a notable rivalry between all these British boxers. It’ll be fascinating to hear their thoughts on themselves, each other and other boxers of the time.”
