Who is deserving of an historic green Plaque?

-

SIGNIFICANT figures from the county’s history can get the recognition they deserve as the nominations open for the green plaque award.

Individuals and places can have a commemorative plaque erected in their honour as part of the Leicestershire County Council scheme, now in its fifth round.

World War Two hero Tommy Brown from Earl Shilton was among the winners who got the most votes in last year’s round.

Councillor Louise Richardson, county council cabinet member for green plaques, said: “The green plaque awards have been a success and we always get a fantastic response from the public.

“We’ve already recognised inventors, war heroes, comedians and a race horse to name a few, but would love to hear about even more people and places that should be recognised.

“I want to encourage as many people as possible to become involved in the next round.”

Nominees must have been deceased for at least 20 years and any property owners whose building would host the plaque must agree in principle to the nomination.

A panel of judges will narrow down the nominations to a dozen of the county’s favourites, with a public vote then deciding the winner.

The next green plaque to be unveiled will be for Lady Florence Dixie from Market Bosworth, who was an author and campaigner for women’s rights.

Submit your nomination on the county council website.

Nominations close on April 30.
