Retirement estate plan for former HQ
Office building off Coventry Road is currently empty
MORE than 70 homes and a full-service restaurant could be built as part of a retirement estate in Hinckley.
McCarthy and Stone revealed it plans to build 16 retirement bungalows and 57 extra care apartments on the former National Grid site on Coventry Road.
The complex would include a communal lounge, restaurant, guest suite and landscaped communal gardens, with on-site car parking and access via Short Way
The group said it will submit a planning application after a public exhibition to display the proposals, which took place at the Salvation Army on Lancaster Road.
Some 25 people came along to the event and saw the plans.
Matt Wills, regional managing director of McCarthy and Stone, said: “The vast majority of those we spoke to strongly supported the way in which we are propos- ing to
redevelop this vacant, brownfield site.
“There is a real need in Hinckley for specialist retirement accommodation and this site is ideally-located for older people, being close to the town centre, bus route and train station.
“We will carefully review all the feedback received during our consultation and feed this into our final plans which we aim to submit to the council in October.”
The scheme involves a mix of Retirement Living bungalows for over-55s and Retirement Living Plus apartments for over-70s, with the apartments including access to on-site care and support 24 hours a day.
The former National Grid site has been vacant since 2015.
An outline application was made in December 2017 to demolish the now empty former National Grid offices adjacent to the new Redrow estate and construct up to 42 houses.
There are also plans to build a Lidl store on Coventry Road on the site of the HJ Hall factory, which was demolished in Autumn last year.
