Cat and Barlestone fight out a tense draw in Division One

CAT H and Barlestone B fought out a very close match in Div 1 of the Hinckley Table Tennis League.

Cat H went into a 3 sets to 2 lead only for Barlestone B to come back with vital wins by Norman Weaver (BB) over Ian Knight(Cat H) and Bob Dale (BB) over Ben Rhodes (Cat H) to go one set up at 4 sets to 3. Weaver then taking the eighth set for a 5 sets to 3 lead. Cat H fought back with Knight (CAT H) overcoming Dave Scragg (BB) in the ninth and also claiming the doubles to earn the draw at 5 sets apiece. In their next match Cat H found Barlestone A far too strong losing by 10 sets to nil.

Barlestone A continue to set the pace taking a further win over Queen’s Mira by 8 sets to 2. Jon Jacom starred with a maximum for Barlestone.

G Ward D with new signing Chris Brewer included took a fine draw against Cat B, Brewer winning all three of his matches whilst Edward Brown collected one win with Brewer and Brown also taking the doubles to earn the draw. In their next fixture GWD lost by 8 sets to 2 to last season’s champions Goons with Jason Woodfield (Goons) winning all three of his games, whilst Callum Dale and Edward Brown took one set each for GWD. Goons came unstuck against G Ward B losing by 8 sets to 2. Mick Allsopp (GWD) taking three sets for G Ward.

Cat B lost by 4sets to 6 to Queen’s Mira. Queens were always in control despite the closeness of the final score. Man of the match was Ian Heavey (QM) who won all three sets.

Title contenders Cat A and GWA went head to head in a close match. The Barwell side raced to a 3 sets to 1 lead before Pete Jamieson (Cat A) and Nick Raynor (GWA) fought out the best set of the match. It went all the way to five games with Jamieson winning 11-8 in the fifth.

Cat then went 5 sets to 4 up before GWA through Andy Spring and Raynor collected the doubles for the draw.

Barlestone A are top of the table at this early stage.
