THE fact that High Court judges are up for a massive pay increase made me think that MPs probably think they are due for another one too. By way of justification, they say that you have to pay top salaries to attract the best candidates but the reality is often different. What you in fact attract is the mediocrity that could not possibly command such a high salary in any other walk of life – there is no training and development process with progressive salary increases based on performance like there is for the rest of us – just the full rate from day 1, not to mention the perks (second home, expenses etc) and there is no line management structure to which you are accountable on a day to day basis. Nice work if you can get it.
