Mixed fortunes for youngsters in first round of Leicester league

THE young players from the George Ward Club , part of the Hinckley Table Tennis League took part in the first round of the Leicester Developmen­t League last weekend at the Leicester Grammar School, with mixed fortunes.

This is a competitio­n that traditiona­lly George Ward sides have performed well at and several of the six teams entered played very well indeed, a couple of the others found their opponents difficult.

Barwell G Ward C were in the top Division 1A and they finished in second spot to the highly rated Winstan- ley Wizards A. GWA defeated Knighton Park – Eagles by 3 sets to 1 and followed this up with another good win over Knighton Park Tigers by 4 sets to nil. In the Crunch match versus Winstanley Wizards A they lost a close match by 3 sets to 1. Callum Dale won five from six matches, losing only to Dan Andrews (WWA). His teammate Jack Dennis won three of his games.

In Division 1B GWB finished third winning only one match against Electricit­y 1 by 3 sets to 1.

They lost their other two matches to Winstanley Wizard B, the eventual winners by 3 sets to 1 and to Knighton Park –Scorpions by 4 sets to nil. Tom Kelly winning three from six, with Frankie Hallam winning just one from six.

In division 1C G Ward had two sides competing, GWA took the division winning all three of their matches. Firstly defeating Knighton Park Badgers by 4 sets to nil, they followed this with a 3 sets to 1 win over their own GWE by 3 sets to 1 and in their final game secured top spot with their 3 sets to 1 win over Knighton Park – Bears.

Ollie Wynne winning all six of his matches whilst brother Matt won four of his six games. For GWE they fin- ished third defeating KP Badgers by 3 sets to 1. James Walker winning three from six games and team-mate Bevan Wale taking a single victory from his six games.

In division 3B GWF found life tough losing two matches firstly to KP Wolves 4 sets to nil and then to Winstanley Wizards G also by 4 sets to nil.

They did manage a draw against Leicester Grammar School 2. Maisie Dowler-Morley and Eppie Southern both winning one game each.

In Division 3C Barwell G Ward D won the Division winning all three of their games. They beat KP –Foxes by 3 sets to 1, then followed that with another 3 games to 1 win over Winstanley wizards H and finally they beat electricit­y 4 by 4 sets to nil to gain top spot. Star for the side was young Freya Wynne winning all her matches. Both Lucy Dennis and Matt Halliday won three of their four games to support Freya.

In the next round of matches next Saturday George Ward will have two teams in Division One –GWA and GWC, whilst GWB will play in Division Two. GWE will play in Division three and GWD will play in division seven, with GWF dropping to division 9.
