Top banana awards for baker Kate
A BANANA and an old woman were the two winning entries crafted by a talented cake maker.
Kate Jordin from Hinckley won two Cake International Silver awards in the Small Decorative Exhibit category for her sweet creations made of modelling chocolate and paste.
The banana took 10 hours to make while the old woman sitting with her bag by a wall took 20 hours.
She said: “Though all entries have to be edible, ironically neither of mine actually involve any cake, nor do many of the competition entries.
“Both mine are made from modelling chocolate, modelling paste (which is different to normal icing) and painted with cocoa butter and edible dust colours.”
Ms Jordin has been in the contest three times and previously won a Certificate of Merit and a Bronze award.
She said: “I am thrilled to have achieved two Silver Awards this time, especially as the judging system changed this year and was a lot tougher.
“I had a lot of fun creating my entries, and I love the fact that they made so many people smile over the Cake International weekend.”
As well as competing this year, the baker was also part of her first feature exhibit at Cake International - Peach Life, a celebration of the Roald Dahl’s books.
She also took part in three different collaboration displays, one of which won the Best Group category.
Ms Jordin said: “Cake International is more a celebration of cake artistry then cake making.
“It is the opportunity for cake makers like me to really let our imaginations go wild and really explore our creative and artistic side.”
The contest is the world’s biggest cake decorating and sugarcraft event with some competitors taking weeks or months to prepare their entries.
It happens each November and showcases the latest trends and supplies, along with cutting edge workshops and demos and a world famous display at the NEC in Birmingham.
This year it was Cake International’s 25th anniversary, with the competition growing to its biggest ever, with 1,900 entries.
Ms Jordin runs The Bake Well Tart and also teaches cake decorating classes.
The next classes are on December 16 and 23.
