Application lodged to build retirement homes complex

-

A DEVELOPMENT of retirement homes is planned for the former National Grid building in Hinckley’s Coventry Road.

Bosses at retirement house building company McCarthy and Stone want to demolish the former National Grid offices and build 16 one and two bedroomed bungalows with gardens for retired people. They also want to build a three storey block of 57 flats aimed at older people who need a staff to provide care, do domestic chores and run an emergency call service.

The development will include communal gardens, a communal lounge, parking spaces and garages.

A planning application has been sent to Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council. The application follows on from a public consultation held at the Salvation Army in Hinckley in September.

Matt Wills, regional managing director of McCarthy and Stone, commented: “We would like to thank everyone who took their time to attend our public exhibition and provide their feedback on our plans to redevelop this vacant, brownfield site.

“Our public consultation revealed that the local community is firmly in support of our plans to regenerate this under utilised site with an attractive, high quality retirement scheme.

“Many of those we spoke to welcomed the design and layout of our proposed development and felt it would help address the shortage of housing for older people in Hinckley.

“Our proposals would also deliver a range of wider benefits, including a boost for local business- es in Hinckley, a streamlined health and social care provision, and the release of under-occupied homes back into the local market, enabling younger families to get on the housing ladder.”

The 1.2 hectare site is between Clarendon Park and Short Way, the new access into Redrow’s Park View. It was previously part of the wider Jarvis Porter complex before the premises was taken over by National Grid - now renamed Cadent. The building has been empty for more than three years.

In January this year SREIT Property Ltd made an outline planning application to demolish the former National Grid offices and build 42 homes on the site. But the development didn’t go ahead.
