MP meets French visitors to town twinning group
SOUTH Leicestershire MP, Alberto Costa, recently welcomed a group of foreign visitors from the French town of Chambourcy for a weekend of activities in their twinned town Lutterworth.
Mr Costa met with visiting families and the organisers of the visit, the Lutterworth and District Twinning Association, to formally welcome the visi- tors from across the channel.
As part of their trip the visitors spent a day at one of the town’s schools before the families then spent the weekend exploring Calke Abbey and watching the fireworks displays in Lutterworth.
Mr Costa said: “It was such a pleasure to welcome the visiting families to the town recently. Lutterworth has a very rich and deep history associated with their French counterparts and the Twinning Association have really done a tremendous job in fostering such good relationships with the wonderful people from Chambourcy and long may this continue.”
Developments between the two towns began in 1996 with the twinning formally taking place in 1999 with the signing of a charter in Lutterworth.
Mrs Christine Horsfall, Chair of the Lutterworth and District Twinning Association, added: “We are very pleased to welcome 22 visitors from our twin town, the families took part in a weekend of activities and we thoroughly hope they enjoyed their time here.
“The Association is making great progress in increasing the number of families involved, the friendships formed will last a lifetime and will help to broaden the horizons of our young people.
“We are also very grateful to Alberto for joining us for an evening to formally welcome the families.”
Mr Costa concluded: “This is a fine example of a brilliant cultural exchange with our French counterparts and I would really like to thank the Twinning Associations, on both sides of the channel, for their brilliant work in organising this visit.
“At a time when our relations with our European neighbours are rather fraught, it’s very encouraging to see that events such as these are still very successful in furthering ties and building relationships.”
